The Initiative

Hospital Unit Clerical work

During my high school coop experience, I took initiative to complete any necessary work by doing what I could to do to get the work done. This included, printing more sheets into patient binders, assisting visitors at the desk and answering phone calls as needed. In particular, is when the patient call bell malfunctioned while I was alone at the desk which led me to take the responsibility of telling the nurses personally which patients needed their attention.

Results

Due to my initiative and efforts to perform of designated tasks, all visitors, patients and staff were content and able to do their own tasks. As I perform my tasks, the operations of the hospial floor are done accordingly while those around are content with their schedule work due to my efforts. All visitors and staff were always pleased by diligence and positive presence.

Reflection

My high school experience has led me to be diligent with any given work while creating a welcoming atmosphere in the hospital. I learned the importance of being positive and taking initiative in order for all tasks are in working order. After each shift I worked, I always felt content that I was able to assist visitors, patients and staff. This made me feel like a member of the team and happy to assist the public. The important quality I learned about my self was that I have a passion for assisting others to the best of my ability and ensuring their experience catered to their needs. Also, I discovered my urge to address social injustices in health. Especially, when I would personally see the health care experience of staff, medical professionals, patients and their families which caused me to develop public health concerns and employee concerns. In addition, I learned to adapt to certain changes in present scenarios I am in. This experience has shaped my health care perception and career pathway.

The Experience of Innovation

Paper Daisies project of social networks for ICE training

Map of Paper Daisies

In this opportunity, me and my group members collectively created a visual representation of our social network proposal for Paper Daisies. Paper Daises is a small organization that operates on eco-friendly and independent operations such as producing jams from their fruit crops. The team from Paper Daisies enlisted some creative help from my Environment Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students, to innovate ideas on how can Paper Daisies grow as business but still be independent on its own. Me and my group suggested to establish networks with local supermarkets and businesses while still being committed to its environmental ways. Further, we suggested this can be done by making connections with businesses that were local and shared the same environmental beliefs.

Results

From our proposal, Paper Daisies gained insight and visual representation of the opportunity to establish a networking with local businesses and supermarkets while being committed to their eco-friendly practices. The representative team of Paper Daisies were very interested in our proposal and liked how we incorporated their view of environmentalism and plans for the company expansion while working independently.

Reflection

ICE training gave me the experience to be innovative, collaborative with my peers and a real company with environmental plans. I gained insight on how essential teamwork is collective innovation. My training provided me with skills such as teamwork, initiative, creativity and entrepreneurship to utilize in the workplace especially in decision-making.
