Artifact Story:

Let’s Get Started

In the summer of 2018, I gained the work-study opportunity to be an Ambassador for the Get Started program at the University of Toronto in Scarborough where I demonstrated my interpersonal skills. The program was focused on assisting high-school school students, international students, or transfer students in the transition to their first-year at the university. As a Get Started Ambassador, I displayed the role of welcoming first year students and their family to the university while providing information and advice to visitors about the university and student life. During my experience, I was able to interact with students and visitors by promoting student life and the opportunities available on campus.

Results

Through my experience, I put into practice my interpersonal skills by interacting with students, staff and visitors. I learned how to show enthusiasm to students in spite of the overwhelming atmosphere that the transition to university involves. My efforts to speaking with students and their parents allowed students and visitors to gain provide assurance and advice to students and visitors. In particular, I was able to provide academic and course enrollement advice to students so that students were able to choose courses and programs. Using my interpersonal skills, I provided information and directions on how to get around campus to students and visitors during the Get Started program.

Reflection

The demonstration of interpersonal skills has teached me the importance of using interpersonal skills. Particularly, I learned about the importance of providing assurance with enthusiasm and positive attitude. Moreover, displaying enthusiasm allows for people to engage their interest in a conversation or specific topic. Also, the benefit of interacting with others is the opportunity is networking and meeting new people. From my Ambassador experience, I was able to meet future students who were interested in the same field as study as me and connect with staff from different academic disciplines and different years of undergraduate. In addition, I enjoy the aspect of interaction where I am able to help others. In my future career, I would be compelled to assist others and network. Further, I would take the opportunity to represent an organization with passion when exercising my interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skills is the best opportunity to connect with the community.
